Russ Duerksen’s love for the outdoors began at a young age while living with his family in small town America. In addition to working on his grandparents’ farm in South Dakota, Russ and his brothers spent much of their time outdoors canoeing, hiking through the woods and walking along railroad tracks exploring nature. These experiences inspired him to sketch and draw and eventually learn how to transform these ideas into wildlife paintings.
He exhibited his paintings at art shows, competing in various competitions including state and federal duck stamp contests. He supported his family as an electrician and a commercial artist. His accomplishments led to his lifelong dream of being a full time wildlife artist.
